CONCANNON Family History
Recorded in the spellings of O'Concannon and Concannon, this is a famous Irish surname. The name is particularly associated with County Galway, and it is said that for many centuries was found only there. The clan claim descent from a warrior called 'Cuceannan' who was killed in battle in 991 a.d. The name is believed to translate as 'the fair headed hound' which is possible, anything is possible with surnames. Irish surnames in particular, descend from the original chieftain, and many are or were, nicknames for some aspect of the chief. CORRECTION : Thomas Cannon's sister Catherine ( as written above )served with Saint Josephs of Toronto (CSJ ) for nearly 70 years - not as previously suggested with IHM. A beloved teacher and hospital administrator. When she went to Canada at 17 to join the Sister's Catherine's dream as a little girl was to work with the native American peoples. Ultimately she did achieve that dream with the sisters.

Concannon
Thomas Cannon born 1909, became Brother Gabriel with Christian Brothers and served over 80 years as he entered at 14. His father was Patrick and his grandfather was Joseph Concannon, Inishbofin, Co Galway. Joseph and wife Mary ( Halloran) emigrated from Ireland in 1870 to Scranton , Pa and the coal mines. Brother Gabriel founded modern day Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore. 20 years as Missionary in Phillipines, just like St Colman on Inishbofin in 6th century. Brother Gabriel sister Catherine also a nun with Immaculate Heart of Mary.
