MCNALLY Family History
Recorded in several spellings as shown below, this is a famous Irish surname. It is a development of either of two original Gaelic surnames. The first was 'Mac con Ulaidh' composed of the elements 'Mac' meaning son of, 'con', a hunting dog, and 'uladh', the province of Ulster. As to why anybody should be called 'The son of the hound of Ulster' is unclear, but the hound was highly regarded in early heraldry, and particularly so in Ireland. As such it probably described a fast moving and brave soldier.Select Audience

Hi I'm Michael McNally from Dundee in Scotland. I believe my great grandfather came over Ireland in the early 1900's and settled in Lochee, an area of Dundee where many irish settled due to finding work in the jute mills. The area would become known as Tipperary due to the amount of Irish settlers. My grandfather was James McNally who married Mary Swan and had four children, Mary, George, James and Nigel. Any info would be appreciated.
